Our Story
Sanlaap North America was founded by Sindhura Sarikonda in 2009 with the mission of rescuing, sheltering and rehabilitating human trafficking victims. While she was attending NYU, Sindhura watched the documentary "The Day My God Died" and was horrified as she watched girls as young as 10 describe being kidnapped, sold, raped and beaten. She immediately began researching human trafficking and learned that there are 1.2 million girls living in India's brothels and that this human rights tragedy was largely swept under the rug. She decided that day that she needed to join the fight against human trafficking. After months of research, Sindhura recognized that she couldn't properly run facilities in India without a base there, so she partnered with Sanlaap India. Sanlaap India has done amazing work to fight trafficking for over 20 years. The founder of Sanlaap India, Indrani Sinha, provided a wealth of knowledge about human trafficking and survivor needs when SNA was in it's initial stages; Indrani continues to be vital to the success of Sanlaap North America. After a year of working with Indrani and the Sanlaap India team to create a business model for SNA, Sindhura officially founded Sanlaap North America. She then asked fellow NYU alum - Hoshrav, Puja and Reema - who were passionate about the cause to join the SNA team. Today, SNA is a successful non-profit with 42 volunteers, 400+ donors, and 6 partner organizations.
